Johnny & Tony Connell Memorial Handicap Hurdle
Alquamar 0.5pt EW 20/1 (4 places B365) – Has a little bit to prove here today and question marks surround whether he wants this longer trip. That said he is unexposed over these longer trips and did put in a couple of runs last term that suggest that he could get them. Has 3 course wins over much shorter trips so a liking for the track has been shown. Despite running from 3lb out of the handicap today he is going from 19lb lower than his last winning mark and went well fresh here last year in a race that has worked out very well from 8lb higher so has to hold excellent EW chances if seeing this trip out.

Far Sight 1pt win only 4/1 – Very lightly raced and unexposed 7 year old who has had just 6 runs to date. Put in a very pleasing run on yard debut last time out following a 410 day lay off and the form of that race is just starting to work out. Should be fitter here for that run and comes here with his yard very much in form with 3 winners from their last 5 runners. Yards record at the track is an excellent one too with 6 wins and 3 placed from 14 runners for a 42% strike rate and a LSP of +12. A yard that doesn’t waste much ammo and they send 2 here today.

Simpsons Paradox 0.5 pt EW 50/1 – The top 3 in the market are there on merit for sure but all 3 have a question to answer today whether it be trip or handicap mark. The winner will likely come from those 3 but we may have stumbled upon a dark horse here with this selection. This yard have been enjoying a good time of it on the flat since the partnership was formed and on some of this ones Irish form there is a very definite case that can be built for this one. Not done too much in two runs for the yard but drops back to the trip he performed well at in Ireland and gets the blinkers back on that gave him his sole win on his last run in a maiden for J Harrington. Mark doesn’t look to be overly harsh on best form and a place at a whopping price would not be out of the question, will relish any rain that falls too.

Shotley Royale 0.5pt EW 16/1 (5 places B365) – Slow away last time and can be forgiven that run if able to break well today. Previously had gone close from out of the handicap as he does here over this trip and on soft ground. Still very lightly raced and ought to have plenty more to offer than what has been shown given the promise that was shown on debut. A weak race that can be exploited by one from the right side of the draw.

Kodebreaker 1pt win only 7/1 – Doesn’t get his head in front very often but is ultra consistent and comes here on a basement mark for a yard very much in form. Has 2 wins from 10lb higher last year at Southwell and has run well on soft ground from 12lb higher at around this time last year. Will need to pull out a bit more and hopefully a change in the saddle bringing id S De Sousa could make a difference as well as a chance of scenery and some give in the ground.

Mystery Monarch 1pt win only 6/1 – Two decent runs since returning from over 900 days off the track and this very lightly raced 5 year old still appears to retain plenty of ability. Switch to turf could bring about a bit of improvement too. Yard are in great form and its always a big positive when connections show the patience that has been put on display with this one. A very promising 2/3 year old who could play a part in this company.
